Call 4 Action reporter Meghan Jones says a local rent-to-own business owner is repaying consumers.Easy Realty owner Jim Platts has agreed to give refunds for what CRESAZ and Attorney General Tom Corbett's office calls "unfair business practices.""He has agreed to pay restitution for consumers who have been victims," Deputy Attorney General Amy Schulman said. "He has also agreed to pay civil penalties and costs." Beth Haller told Call 4 Action that she is one of those consumers."The home was 13 acres. We loved it and we were going to purchase the home," Haller said.Haller and her husband paid an $8,000 deposit and $1,000 in monthly rent. At the end of the lease to purchase a home, they thought they would buy the home."All of a sudden, the sheriff shows up at the house telling us we had 10 days to get out," Haller said. "First thing I did was call Jim Platts. Never returned a phone call."Schulman said Haller was one of many people who complained about a business pattern that only benefited the company because the consumer almost always lost money."The consumer is afforded no protection," Schulman said. "If the home is sold at sheriff's sale or foreclosed upon, they don't get a refund of their down payment. In addition, Easy Realty subjected the consumers to excessive late fees as high as $100 a day for late payments."Anyone who believes they are entitled to restitution from this company should contact Corbett's office before July 10.
